Chairman announces intention to step down after six years

Tessa Green CBE, chairman of Moorfields Eye Hospital, has announced her intention to step down from her role in December after six years.

Speaking about the announcement, Tessa explains: “It is with sadness that I am announcing my intention to stand down from the role of chairman at the end of the year.

“Moorfields has an important and exciting vision to develop, discover and deliver the very best eye care. Our busy agenda demands time and focus to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead. Having reached the important milestone of submitting our full business case for Oriel, our proposal to build a world-leading centre for eye care, research and education, I feel now is the right time for me to step down and entrust the next stage of our journey to a new chairman.

“It has been a privilege to serve as chairman for such a world-renowned institution and I am certain Moorfields will continue to drive forward the vital innovations our patients need.”

Tessa became chairman at Moorfields in September 2016, having served as chairman of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and trustee of the Institute of Cancer Research from 1998 - 2010. Tessa previously also served as a non-executive director at the Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals NHS Trust and has a particular interest in health research and clinical governance.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Martin Kuper, chief executive of Moorfields, added: “Tessa has been instrumental in keeping Moorfields at the forefront of eye care, delivering cutting edge research and education throughout her tenure as chairman.

“Under her direction, Tessa has demonstrated a tireless commitment to making sure our patients get access to the very best care they deserve, both now and, thanks to Oriel, well into the future too.

“These are very significant achievements and Tessa will undoubtedly be missed by all of us here at Moorfields. I would like to thank her personally for her support, and for her dedication and drive in helping to shape the legacy of Moorfields. The process to appoint her successor will begin shortly.”
