Moorfields launches portrait gallery of staff who worked throughout the pandemic

An online portrait gallery, known as ‘Faces of Moorfields’, featuring more than 120 staff members who worked throughout the pandemic has been launched by Moorfields Eye Hospital.

As part of Moorfields’ week of 'reflect and reconnect' events to recognise, thank and celebrate its team, frontline and non-frontline staff, volunteers, and fundraisers were invited to have their portrait photograph taken. This includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists and healthcare technicians, domestic workers, administrators, security, and communications staff.

Inspired by the portrait series of frontline NHS staff during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic by the photographer Rankin, ‘Faces of Moorfields’ aims to showcase the people behind the masks who have worked tirelessly to care for patients and each other.

The online portrait gallery can be viewed on the trust's Flickr channel: https://www.flickr.com/photos/144183511@N03/albums/72157719487803839

Truly honoured

Speaking about the portrait gallery, David Probert, chief executive of Moorfields said:

“I am truly honoured to have been part of such an incredibly dedicated and inspiring team at Moorfields. Our staff, clinical and non-clinical, have shown great resilience and leadership during the pandemic whilst continuing to provide the very best care to patients at Moorfields and across London. This gallery is a wonderful tribute to, and provides a snapshot of, the fantastic people here at Moorfields who I know will continue to provide the best care they can.”

Brendan Wimsey, Logistics operative at the hospital said it is a real honour to be included in the gallery: "To be able to ensure the smooth running of all the departments during the pandemic has been a challenge, but to see so many members of staff all aiming for the same thing has been inspiring. To be recognised as part of the overall picture, even though I work behind the scenes, make me feel proud."

Professor Mariya Moosajee, Professor of molecular ophthalmology and consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology too reflected on the challenge of the pandemic. “This past year has been unprecedented, one of the hardest periods of our entire lives. All those working in our NHS have shown true courage, strength and resilience. I could not feel prouder to be part of this world-class organisation, and in particular, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields. This gallery is a commemoration of the past year, and how together, we form the Moorfields family.”
