Moorfields opens new site on Stratford Broadway

Moorfields Eye Hospital has opened a new hub at Stratford Broadway to serve east and north-east London with a wide range of eye care services, close to Stratford’s shops, services and excellent transport links.

Moorfields at Stratford is our second largest standalone site (after City Road) and will provide around 70,000 appointments per year. By moving to a larger site, we will be able to increase our capacity, helping us to reduce outpatient and surgery waiting lists. We are able to open this facility thanks to additional funding from NHS England’s Target Investment Fund.

This new hub brings together in one place a range of diagnostic, consultant-led outpatient and surgical eye services for glaucoma, medical retina and cataracts.

It will reduce the time for diagnostic appointments from a couple of hours or more to just 45 minutes.

It will also create new operating theatres for east and north-east London patients later this year. They are currently served by St Ann’s Hospital, in Haringey.

Bringing everything together in one central place also allows us to offer more comprehensive support services, including a low vision clinic, a specialist pharmacy and Eye Clinic Liaison Officers for those facing sight loss.

Dr. Martin Kuper, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, commented: “I am delighted to announce the opening of this new, state-of-the-art facility. The site also offers fantastic accessible transport for patients in East London. We will be able to offer local people more convenient outpatient appointments, new services and save them time on diagnostic testing.”

Two of our existing sites in east London, Mile End and the current Stratford clinic at Sir Ludwig Guttmann (SLG), will no longer be offering eye care. All the activity from these sites will be transferred to the new Stratford hub.

We are working on a proposal to develop our site at Barking Community Hospital into a centre offering diagnostic tests, jointly operated by Moorfields, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and Barts Health. All consultant-led outpatient appointment eye clinics currently provided at Barking (about a quarter of our appointments at Barking) will relocate to the new Stratford facility.

Further details of these changes are available on the Moorfields at Stratford project page.
