Twelve Moorfields staff honoured in the Ophthalmologist Power List 2023

Twelve Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) staff were named on The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023, a list of the top 100 most influential people in the world of ophthalmology.
This year’s theme was ten years of excellence and impact on ophthalmology, with each nomination highlighting the most influential and inspirational people in the field across the past decade. Judging was against the impact each individual has made across five separate themes.
Two Moorfields staff were named in the Power List’s top ten, with a total of four in the top 20, recognising them for truly world-leading impact. With twelve names, the Moorfields and UCL IoO partnership are the most represented institution in the world across the whole list.
Congratulations to all the staff who feature on the Power List 2023, and to their teams at Moorfields and UCL IoO who have supported their achievements.

Top ten
Gus Gazzard - consultant ophthalmic surgeon and director of surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and professor of ophthalmology at UCL IoO.
Gus’s areas of interest are in the diagnosis and surgical management of glaucoma and cataracts. His work on the LiGHT trial, a major study for which he was chief investigator, has most recently led to NICE revising glaucoma treatment guidelines.

Sir Peng Tee Khaw – director of research, development and innovation at Moorfields Eye Hospital, director of NIHR BRC at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL IoO.
Amongst his many achievements, Sir Peng is perhaps best known for his significant contribution to the field of glaucoma where he has developed many improved techniques for surgery, including the internationally-used Moorfields Safer Surgery System principles.

Paul Foster - professor of ophthalmic epidemiology and glaucoma studies, theme leader – population and data sciences, UCL IoO and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

David (Ted) Garway-Heath – professor of ophthalmology for glaucoma and allied studies at the UCL IoO and consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
