Moorfields Eye Hospital inspected by Care Quality Commission

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has released a new report into the surgical services offered by Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust following an unannounced inspection by the earlier this year.

The CQC looked at the ‘well-led’ aspect of the services we provide, as well as an unannounced inspection of our surgical services at City Road in September. As part of the review, the inspectors also visited the admissions office and examined the trust’s leadership and management of our surgical services.

The CQC confirmed that Moorfields Eye Hospital would retain its overall rating of ‘Good’ as well as services being rated as ‘Outstanding’ at City Road.

The inspection team noted several examples where the trust’s leadership arrangements helped staff to deliver high-quality eye care to our patients.

The CQC report also highlighted some areas of improvement, with a particular focus on culture and engagement to ensure that all patients could consistently access the best possible eye care.

Commenting on the report, Dr Martin Kuper, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This report underlines that we are continuing to deliver the world-class eye care our patients deserve.

“Like many NHS organisations, Moorfields has gone through an intense period of change and, having maintained our rating, we are focussed on continuing to improve our services so that our patients continue to get the very best treatment and care.

“We know where we have work to do and have already put new structures, people and plans into place to ensure our staff feel better supported and listened to at work. We look forward to working together with our staff and patients over the coming months and years to ensure we remain at the very cutting edge of eye care treatment, research and education.”

Following a formal inspection by the CQC in March 2019, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was rated overall as ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ for being effective.
