Children and young people rate Moorfields care in CQC survey

Children, young people and their carers highly rate the care and treatment they receive at Moorfields according to the results of the first national children’s hospital survey 2014 published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Moorfields was among the highest scoring trusts for children saying they “felt safe” on our hospital ward and the people looking after them “listened to what they had to say” and explained their operations in a way they could understand. When it came to rating the hospital for a “good overall experience in care” we achieved the highest score possible compared to other trusts.

The results of the survey, which were published today (July1) by the CQC on their website, focused on young patients who were admitted for treatment in 137 acute and specialist NHS trusts across England.

The survey covers a wide range of areas including: questions on pain control, operations and procedures; facilities for patients and carers and the overall experience of care; speaking with patients and providing information; the hospital ward and hospital staff; and being prepared for leaving hospital.

Moorfields did better than average in 27 out of the 48 questions asked and was not worse than any other trust in any other area of service. The areas in which we did better included:

  • Patients felt safe on the hospital ward
  • Patients had enough privacy when receiving care and treatment
  • Explaining how the operation or procedure went in a way that was understood
  • People looking after them listened
  • Patients had a good overall experience of care in the hospital

The areas where we were the same as other trusts included:

  • Patients knew what would happen to them at the hospital
  • Hospital staff talked to patients in a way they could understand
  • Someone from the hospital explained what would happen during the operation or procedure
  • The people looking after patients were friendly

Moorfields director of nursing and allied health professions, Tracy Luckett said: “We are delighted by the findings of the report. Overall Moorfields scored well in comparison to other trusts that see children and young people. We are really proud of the fact that children overall had a good experience in our care and that our young patients feel safe and that our staff listen to them. It is very rewarding for our staff to see that patients, their parents and carers appreciate the personalised care we strive to achieve.”

The CQC standardise the results between trusts to enable a comparison to be made and also compares scores achieved by the other 137 trusts taking part in the survey and calculates an ‘expected range’ within which Moorfields scores should fall. Each question is then scored as to whether Moorfields result is ‘better’, ‘about the same’ or ‘worse’ when compared with most other trusts in the survey. This grading, along with the numerical score, is what appears on the CQC website.

The CQC published results are ‘standardised’ from a survey which was carried out by the Picker Institute to enable a better comparison between trusts. The results for each question are calculated to ensure that secondary responses e.g.  ‘.to some extent’, form part of the weighted score, as is demographic data such as the age, gender and number of respondents. A more detailed summary of the methodology can be found on the CQC website.
