Moorfields Eye Hospital at Potters Bar expands services

People living with severe eye conditions caused by retinal problems can now be treated closer to home thanks to a new service from Moorfields Eye Centre at Potters Bar.

The new medical retina and intravitreal injection service will run on Wednesdays, all day Thursdays and with an additional Fluorescein angiography service on alternate Mondays.

This service treats conditions which occur at the back of the eye including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and retinal blood vessel blockages. These conditions are treated medically using drugs, eye drops or injection treatment.

The consultant in charge of the service Mr. Praveen Patel said “We are delighted to have been able to secure the funding to invest in this new service at Potters Bar.”

“As patients with conditions affecting the retina such as age-related macular degeneration have to be assessed on a regular basis often to provide on-going treatment, it can be difficult for patients to travel into central London. With the specialist AMD and diabetic retinopathy treatments being provided locally by Moorfields’ consultants, patients and carers can access more patient-centred treatment on their doorstep.”

Mr Praveen Patel also stressed the availability of new treatments through research stating “My consultant role at Moorfields involves a significant commitment to clinical research. When we see patients in the new medical retina clinic at Potters Bar we always discuss new research and how local patients can get involved both to help their condition and indeed to help future patients”.

Moorfields treats over 107,851 outpatients a year with medical retina conditions.

The majority of patients will be newly diagnosed patients seen at Potters Bar having being referred by their GP or optician.
