Unveiling of a new art collection by Frederick Creasey

On Tuesday 8 September a new art collection by Moorfields patient, Frederick Creasey, will be unveiled at 12pm in the optometry corridor at City Road. As well as a talented artist, academic and film maker, Frederick is also an age related macular degeneration outpatient at Moorfields.

Frederick trained at Camberwell Art School and John Cass Art School. Most of his working life, when not producing art, has been concerned with exploring aspects of the visual. He worked as a teacher/lecturer of film studies at Birkbeck College, The British Film Institute and Regents University, in addition to teaching on the Open University Arts Course for many tears. Frederick’s paintings are always concerned with form, shape and colour. Although most of the paintings in this exhibition are composed of geometric forms, the origins of many of them emerged from thoughts, and visual or emotional experience.

Frederick says: “For some time I have attended Moorfields Eye Hospital for the treatment of age related macular degeneration. My experience of this condition has resulted in a variety of visual images particularly in the area of colour, and this has led to a revival of my interest in painterly abstraction, although I also paint figuratively.”

Refreshments will be served in the BlindArt area where you can meet Frederick, who will be giving guided tours of the exhibition from 1pm. There will also be a Year of Light glass workshop running from 12-1pm, organised by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. This year is the United Nations’ International Year of Light and Moorfields has teamed up with the Institute of Ophthalmology to celebrate this by running workshops to create unique light catchers made out of glass. Once designs have been created, the materials will be melted off-site to make them solid and the completed creations will be displayed at City Road. For more information, contact education coordinator Maaret Virtanen on ext 4665.

Frederick’s art collection will be on display for three months. Art and music at Moorfields is organised by the Arts Committee and funded by the Friends of Moorfields.
