Eye donation campaign

For National Eye Health Week 2014, Moorfields is encouraging more people to sign up to the NHS organ donation register, so that we can continue to provide life-changing operations. During the course of the week, between Monday 22 and Friday 26 September, we'll be publishing a range of information on these pages relating to eye donation and the work of our eye bank.

The week kicked off with a feature as part of BBC1's Inside Out programme. The programme aired on Monday 22 September at 7.30pm in the London region.

The programme shows the work of our corneal service, theatre staff and transplant surgical team as well as that of the eye bank team. 

Two patients who have undergone surgery by consultant ophthalmologist Bruce Allan talk about their conditions and the difference the treatment has made to their lives, and the son of a donor relates how much it meant to his dad to know that his tissue was going to enable 10 sight-saving operations to take place. 

Eye bank manager Khilan Shah explains the role of the eye bank and the process of donation; Bruce Allan talks about the surgery and how operations can be cancelled due to a lack of tissue; and fellow and MRC-funded researcher Maninder Bhogal highlights the research he is undertaking into new ways to prepare corneas for surgery using lasers.
