The helpline is staffed by experienced ophthalmic nurses and open from 9am - 9pm, Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays. At busy times we might not be able to answer your call straight away. Please bear with us and call back a little later if this happens.

Accident & Emergency frequently asked questions

Nearly all of our patients are treated, referred to one of our specialist services or discharged within four hours.

Who will I see in the A&E department?

Everyone is assessed by a medical professional on arrival, who will assess how serious your condition is and whether you need to be seen in the department on the day of arrival.  This will be a senior nurse practitioner or doctor.

Depending on your needs, you will be treated by an emergency nurse practitioner, an emergency care optometrist or one of our A&E doctors.
